John R. Palipkonich, 75, of Sayre, passed away Saturday October 15th at the Robert Packer Hospital with his children by his side after a long courageous battle with cancer. Born in Sayre on June 28, 1936, he was the son of the late Steven and Anna (Commerinsky) Palipkonich. . He was a graduate of Sayre High School class of 1954 and attended Penn State University. He was also a United States Army Veteran, serving with the 101st Airborn Division.
John was a member of the Sayre Elks 1148, Loyal Order of the Moose of Chicago, Il, Sayre, VFW 1536, American Legion Post 283, Sons of Italy and a member of the Valley Notre Dame Club.
He was employed by the Lehigh Valley Railroad & Conrail in the transportation department. Throughout his life he worked in various nurseries and operated his own nursery until 1999.
John will be fondly remembered for his generous spirit, quick wit, his great sense of humor and his great love of family.
John was predeceased by his wife Hazel (Campell) Palipkonich in 2000. He was also predeceased by brothers: Charles Palipkonich Michael Palipkonich. Sisters: Rosella Owczarski, Alga Hotelan and Alice Mullen.
John is survived by his children Judi Palipkonich of Sayre and Steven Palipkonich of Litchfield PA. Granddaughter: Sydney Palipkonich of Lichfield PA. Sisters: Dorothy West of Sayre and Ruth Markevitch of Sayre. Sister-in-laws: Gerry (Howard) Depew, Doris Williams. Brother-in-laws William (Norma) Campbell Mother-in-law Letha Boughton, Friend Sandra Murrelle and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service and celebration of John's life will be held on Saturday October 29th at 11:00 AM at the Sayre Christian Church with Rev. James Donahoo Officiating.
