Lesley F. Smith, 64, of Towanda passed away Sunday evening October 30, 2011, at the Robert Packer Hospital after a 7 ½ year battle with breast cancer. She was born on October 13, 1947, a daughter of the late Paul and Betty Felten. She was a graduate of Towanda High School class of 1965 and Penn State University with a degree in kindergarten elementary education.
Lesley enjoyed the fine arts – all areas of dance, especially ballet, and playing the piano and organ. She taught private piano lessons for over 20 years and also was an elementary teacher in the Towanda Area School District. She was involved in Girl Scouts as a group leader, troop organizer, and Green Circle demonstrator. She was also a Cub Scout leader, past member of the Valley Chorus, and was on the board of directors of Bradford/Sullivan County Young Woman of the Year, serving as secretary and host/chaperone chairman for a number of years. Recently Lesley became a 50-year member of the First Presbyterian Church of Towanda. During this time she taught Sunday School and pre-school/play-day, and also directed the children's choir. In retirement, she enjoyed assisting with musical productions at St. Agnes School, knitting with her friends every Wednesday, working in her perennial gardens, relaxing at Mt. Lake, walking with friends, and taking rides with her husband through the countryside. However, her most important role in life was caring for her husband and raising her four children.
Lesley is survived by the love of her life, Jerry Smith, whom she married on August 5, 1967. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her four children and spouses: Stacie (John) Cox of Towanda; Maureen Smith of York, PA; Jacqueline (Paul) Iampietro of Chambersburg, PA; and Wilson Manning (Amanda) Smith of Middletown, PA. She also leaves a sister, Sally Tepper of St. Louis, MO; a brother-in-law Roe (Bronwyn) Smith of Newton, MA; an aunt, Juanita Felten of Towanda; a niece and nephew; several cousins and many dear friends.
Lesley was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Betty Felten, her father and mother-in-law Wilson and Eleanor Smith (Fox), and a brother-in-law, James Tepper.
The family will receive friends on Friday, November 4, 2011, from 6-8 PM at the First Presbyterian Church of Towanda, 5 Court St., Towanda, PA.
