Richard F. VanDerpoel
May 29, 1948 - March 18, 2026
Richard F. VanDerpoel, a loving husband, father, brother, papa, uncle, cousin and friend to all, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 18th.
He was predeceased by his parents, Dorothy (Sharp) and Ranselar VanDerpoel; his brothers, Ranselar “Junior”, Lloyd, Leroy, Randy, and Mickey VanDerpoel; and his infant daughter Christy Lynn VanDerpoel.
Richard is survived by his devoted wife of 33 years, Susanna “Sue” VanDerpoel; his children, Tammy VanDerpoel, Jason (Cory) VanDerpoel, Aaron (Suzi) VanDerpoel, Kyle VanDerpoel (Marley McCarty), his step-son Brian (Sarah) Lalor, and his beloved “fur baby” Milo James. He is also survived by his sisters Patricia Barton, Betty (Peter) Smith, and Esther (Kerry) Folk; his brother Rick (Vickie) VanDerpoel; and his special “extra daughter,” Misty Williamson.
He leaves behind a large and loving legacy in his grandchildren, Raven (Jake), Rachelle (Codie), Raegan, Abigael, Logan, Xavier, Gabriel, Amya, Donavin, Taylor, Rylee, Makenzie, Karson and Arthur; and his great-grandchildren, Ava, Asher, Aspen, Ava L., Violet, and Jasper.
Richard was the most amazing, dedicated, and supportive husband, father, and grandfather. A Pastor with a deep and unwavering love for Jesus, he lived his life as a reflection of his faith – guiding others, offering encouragement, and always pointing people toward hope, prayer, and God’s love. His ministry extended far beyond the pulpit, touching the lives of all who knew him.
As a high school athlete Richard played football, basketball, baseball and track. In July 2025, he and his 1967 basketball teammates were inducted into the S-VE Athletic Hall of Fame. He coached many different sports from Youth to Varsity and was the first soccer coach at Spencer - Van Etten High School. His passion and love for sports leaves a lasting impact on countless lives. Whether on the field, in the church, or in everyday life, Richard led with kindness, patience, and heart.
He will be remembered for his joyful spirit and the things that made him unforgettable – his time as a care-taker at Park Station, the spot-on Donald Duck impersonations, being one of Santa’s very best helpers, his signature horse-like whinny, his tendency to sing “Jingle Bells” anytime, anywhere, and his endless quest to find the best spaghetti and french onion soup wherever he went. More than anything, he loved watching his grandchildren play sports and took every opportunity to support and cheer them on.
A man of constant prayer and strong faith, Richard was always ready to lift others up, offering comfort, wisdom, and compassion to anyone in need. His family was his greatest blessing, and he made them his highest priority in every season of life.
His legacy of faith, love, laughter, and selflessness will live on in all who knew and loved him.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” – Romans 8:28
