Stewart W. Rae Jr., 88, of South Waverly passed away at the Elderwood Nursing Facility on September 18, 2013 surrounded by his family. He was born on July 13, 1925 in Sayre, the son of the late Stewart W. and Emily (Griffith) Rae. Stewart attended Athens High School then joined the U.S. Navy during WWII (1943-1946) where he served as an airplane mechanic. After the navy, he married the love of his life Norma (Isbell) Rae on June 25, 1947 and together they filled their home with love and happiness for 66 years.
Stewart worked at the Ingersoll Rand in Athens as a tool maker for 41 years. He was very active in the Old-timers antique engine shows in PA, NY and FL. Stewart and Norma traveled to Florida for their winters attending the Old-timers gas engine shows.
Stewart played on his church's softball league at the age of 86, enjoyed being outside and was always very active. He loved fishing, hunting, and built his own canoe. He was involved with the Boy Scouts, a past member of the South Waverly Fire Company, served on the South Waverly Council, was a member of the Waverly First Baptist Church, and sang in the church choir, barbershop quartet, and valley chorus. He was known for riding his moped or bicycle all over the valley.
Stewart was preceded in death by his brother Paul Rae and sister Vivian Ammerman, his grandson Anthony Schultz and great grandson Aiden Blauvelt.
Stewart is survived by his wife Norma Rae at home, five children: Sandra Rae of Sayre, Pamela Rae of Sayre, Stewart III (Barbara) Rae of Sayre, Timothy Rae of Waverly, and Miriam (Chris) Roedts of Sayre; ten grandchildren: Sheila Smith, Amy Carlisle, Timothy Rae Jr. Stacey Nelson, Samantha Rollins, Allison Dix, Rebecca Blauvelt, Jessica Blauvelt, Daniel Rae and Brittany Rae; thirteen great grandchildren with one due in October, many nieces, nephews, cousins and his dog Precious who he greatly enjoyed.
Stewart is survived by his siblings; June Haynes of California, Mary Alice Bidlack of Monroeton, and Charles Rae (Terrie) of South Carolina.
A memorial service and celebration of Stewart's life will be held at the Waverly First Baptist Church, 23 Tioga St, Waverly, NY on Tuesday September 24, 2013 at 11:00 AM with Pastors George Herrick and Steven Reynolds officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Waverly First Baptist Church, 23 Tioga St. Waverly, NY 13892 in loving memory of Stewart W. Rae.
